Not In My Family!
You want to bet on that?
One in three girls. One in six boys. According to the Canadian Badgley Royal Commission, those are the hard, cold facts. Take an average Grade 6 class of 24 students; one can assume that four girls and two boys in that classroom has experienced sexual abuse.
Sexual abuse of children is a well-kept "dirty little secret".
When they are little, we reassure our children that there are no monsters in the dark. But for a large portion of Canadian children, the "boogie man" is real. It isn't a trench-coated stranger handing out candy to unsupervised children in the neighbourhood park. In over 95% of reported cases, it is a person well-known to the family -- a close friend, a relative or a parent.
And no one talks about it.
We are here to change that! We are going to shine a light in the dark corners and bring real, practical support to families whose lives have been ripped apart by childhood sexual abuse.
It is time to stop whispering about it in the dark.
It is time to Turn On The Lights!
